Looking to transfer a European license plate to your spouse, child, or parent? It’s possible and beneficial! By doing so, you can avoid the vehicle sales inspection, the need for new registration documents, and the payment of the vehicle registration tax.
Benefits of transferring a license plate:
- Cost saving: no need to pay the registration tax or go through the vehicle sales inspection.
- Administrative simplicity: no new registration documents required.
- Convenient: transfer the plate to a close relative with minimal paperwork.
Simple steps to follow:
- Complete the registration form (pink paper) with the new owner’s information.
- Add an insurance sticker, which we can provide.
- Include the necessary certificates:
- Written consent from the current plate holder wishing to transfer the plate (attached).
- Documents proving the relationship between the current holder and the new owner:
- For a transfer between spouses: a marriage certificate or a household composition certificate, issued by the municipality within the last 15 days.
- For a transfer between a parent and child: a birth certificate, legal adoption certificate, or household composition certificate, issued by the municipality within the last 15 days.
Good to know:
- If you are transferring both the plate and the vehicle registered under that plate at the same time, a vehicle inspection is not required. You simply need to include the original registration certificate in the application.
- The complete application must be submitted to the DIV, either by mail or by scheduling an appointment at a DIV office
- Fast delivery: the new registration certificate will be sent directly to your home.
Important: this transfer is not possible for plates of the old model (before 15/11/2010). If the plate is not personalized, you will need to request a new one.
