The personalized license plate for your vehicle.

Nowadays, it’s no longer uncommon to see a “special license plate.” How can you personalize your plate, and what combinations are allowed by law? And where should you start?  

The combinations you can use for your license plate are subject to several rules. They cannot contain only numbers and must always include at least one letter (except for vehicles registered before January 1, 1954). Letters must be separated from numbers by a hyphen, which can divide groups of letters or numbers, or be used as a separate symbol.

Prohibited combinations:

To avoid confusion with classic European license plates, the following combinations are not allowed:

1. 3 letters followed by 4 numbers (for example, BEN-4444);  
2. 4 letters followed by 3 numbers (for example, AXEL-333);  
3. 3 numbers followed by 4 letters (for example, 007-BOND);  
4. 4 numbers followed by 3 letters (for example, 2014-BEL);  
5. A-0 and A-999999 (reserved for federal and state ministers, high-ranking magistrates, provincial governors, and ministerial cabinet chiefs);  
6. E-0 and E-999999 (reserved for regional ministers and ministerial cabinet chiefs);  
7. P-0 and P-999999 (reserved for parliamentarians);  
8. Non-separating hyphens or successive separating hyphens (for example, -C- -130 or -SIR-);
9. Letters CD (reserved for the diplomatic corps, for example, CD-AA-123);  
10. Letters W (reserved for export and commercial plates for the professional automotive sector);  
11. Letters TX and TL (reserved for taxis, still in circulation under the format TXX-111);  
12. The letter B followed by three numbers and a letter (reserved for Belgian soldiers in Germany).

How much does a personalized license plate cost?

1000 euros.

You will need to add 30 euros for manufacturing and delivery by Belgian post.

How to request a personalized license plate?

1. Go to the FPS Mobility and Transport website. The “My car – my plate” section allows you to check the availability of the combination. You can also contact DIV directly.  
2. If the combination is approved, you must download the personalized plate reservation form, fill it out, and sign it.  
3. Go to any DIV branch with the completed reservation form. Once all formalities are completed, you can pay for the service by credit card on-site or by bank transfer within 10 days.  
4. From that moment, you have 5 months to submit a registration application for the vehicle mentioned in the reservation form with the personalized license plate of the owner.

Attention! The chosen combination cannot be used to register another vehicle or by another owner.
