Why can’t you leave a registered car without insurance in Belgium?

In Belgium, every registered vehicle must be insured. Even if your car is parked and not in use, the law requires liability insurance (BA/RC). Why?

If your car has license plates, it is considered roadworthy and must be insured. Otherwise, you risk a fine, and in some cases, your vehicle could even be seized.

What to do if an insurance company refuses to insure you?

Sometimes, insurance companies may refuse to provide coverage, for example, due to unpaid bills or a high-risk profile. However, there is still a solution: the Tariff Bureau (Tariferingsbureau/Bureau de Tarification).

How does the Tariff Bureau help drivers?

The Tariff Bureau is a government organization that helps drivers who have been refused insurance. If at least three insurance companies decline your application, you can submit a request to the bureau. They will review your case and assign an insurer that is obligated to provide you with coverage.

How to apply?

  1. Obtain refusals from at least three insurance companies.
  2. Gather your documents: ID card, driver’s license, vehicle registration certificate.
  3. Submit your application through the Tariff Bureau’s website or via an insurance broker.
  4. Wait for a decision – the bureau will assign you an insurance company and determine your premium.

What if I don’t want to insure my car?

If you no longer plan to use your vehicle, you must return your license plates to the DIV (Dienst voor Inschrijvingen van Voertuigen/La Direction pour l’Immatriculation des Véhicules). This officially deregisters your car, and insurance is no longer required.
