New Rules for Tires and Vehicle Inspections

December 1, 2024

Starting December 1, 2024, vehicle inspections in Flanders will include stricter requirements for tire wear. These measures aim to improve road safety by ensuring that vehicles on the road are equipped with compliant and well-maintained tires.

Inspectors will check the tread depth of tires. If the tread reaches the wear indicator (a small cube located in the main groove), the vehicle will receive a red card valid for 15 days. During this time, the driver can still use the vehicle but must resolve the issue and pass another inspection within two months. If the tread depth falls below 1.6 millimeters, the vehicle will be banned from driving immediately, except for trips to a repair center or the owner’s residence.

Other rules include limiting the tire speed index to 160 km/h, even if the vehicle can technically go faster. This changes the current requirement where the speed index must match the vehicle’s maximum speed. Additionally, an electronic marking to certify compliance with European safety standards will become mandatory for cars registered after January 1, 2004.

While these changes will require drivers to replace tires more frequently, they also provide greater assurance of safety for all road users. By securing the condition of vehicles, Flanders aims to reduce accidents caused by technical failures while streamlining certain aspects of vehicle inspections.

This reform reflects a strong commitment to improving road safety. Although it demands adjustments from both professionals and individuals, the long-term benefits in quality, safety, and transparency are clear.
